What are the different types of single use face masks?
Disposable face masks, also known as surgical masks, act as a protective barrier against larger droplets, preventing their spread from the wearer to others. They also safeguard the wearer by blocking inhalation of larger droplets and shielding against fluid splashes and high-velocity streams of bodily fluids.
These single-use face masks are categorised into Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 based on the level of barrier protection they offer.
Barrier Level 1: Suitable for procedures where the wearer faces no risk of splash or spray from blood or bodily substances, or to protect staff and/or patients from exposure to microorganisms through droplets.
For COVID-19 application: Applicable in areas with higher clinical risk, where the patient is NOT suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 and is NOT in quarantine.
Barrier Level 2: Designed for situations with minimal exposure to blood droplets, such as changing dressings on small or healing wounds.
For COVID-19 application: Utilised for droplet and contact precautions during direct care or contact with a person suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 or in quarantine.
Barrier Level 3: Suitable for all surgical procedures, major trauma first aid, or scenarios involving a risk of blood or bodily fluid splash or spray, such as orthopedic or cardiovascular procedures.
For COVID-19 application: Used for droplet and contact precautions during direct care or contact with a person suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 or in quarantine.
What is a Type IIR face mask?
Type IIR face masks EN14683 are specialised medical masks designed with a 3-ply construction, effectively blocking large particles from reaching patients or work surfaces.
These masks also feature a protective layer, offering resistance against blood and bodily fluids. Ensuring efficiency in bacterial filtration, Type IIR face masks undergo testing in the direction of exhalation (inside to outside).
Key characteristics include a pleat style with ear loops or ties, a protective four-layer build, and a wide range of colors and styles to choose from. Additionally, these masks offer a splash-resistant layer, providing added protection against bodily fluids.
Type I, Type IR, Type II, and Type IIR masks primarily safeguard others from the wearer's potential transmission of infections.
How many layers do the masks have?
Our Type IIR masks have 3 layers: a non-woven PP inner layer, a melt-blown filter middle layer, and a non-woven PP outer layer.
What is a melt-blown filter?
Melt blowing serves as a traditional technique for creating micro- and nanofibres, involving the extrusion of a polymer melt through tiny nozzles in the presence of high-speed blowing gas. This process leads to the random deposition of fibres, resulting in the formation of a non-woven sheet product primarily utilised for filtration purposes.
What is BFE?
BFE stands for Bacterial Filtration Efficiency.
Our masks are tested to a BFE of >98%, meaning that the possibility of contracting a virus is significantly reduced.
What is BFR?
BFR stands for Blood Fluid Resistance.
Fluid resistance testing involves subjecting a face mask or respirator to a high-pressure jet of simulated blood, mimicking an arterial puncture directed towards the mask. The testing parameters are designed around the average human blood pressure range (80 – 120 mmHg) and its proximity to the puncture site.
Following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F1862 / F1862M – 17 classification system, face masks or respirators receive ratings as Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 based on their resistance to a 2ml high-velocity directed blood spray at a distance of 300mm:
Level 1: Resistant at 80mmHg
Level 2: Resistant at 120mmHg
Level 3: Resistant at 160mmHg
